I have spent the last 8 years studying and working in the performing arts, taking paid and voluntary roles working with children, travelling, and spending time with indigenous communities. Here is some background on my experience so far, and my motives for this project
* My professional work as a stage manager and theatre / film technician over the last six years has allowed
me to work with a number of arts practitioners, and to gain a full understanding of the planning, rehearsal
and production process involved in putting on a production.
* Involvment in theatre-in-education projects in the UK
* Writing, composing, producing and directing a stage musical and several short films through my own
production company, Spangled Aura Productions, many of which have included children in the cast
* Voluntary work with deprived children in Nairobi, Kenya, including the teaching of basic hygiene
* Leading various musical, dance and drama activities including work with youth theatres, community theatre
groups and brownie and guide units
* Running a music club for disabled youngsters and teaching woodwind in a secondary school during
university
* Travel throughout Africa and South East Asia, giving me a first hand experience of the poverty and lack of
simple education amongst the most deprived communities of the world, but also their vibrant cultural
heritage - I always travel independently, rather than through a travel agent - organising my own transport,
accommodation, visas and other arrangements
* Work on festivals in Katherine and Alice Springs including indigenous and ethnic arts, working alongside
Aboriginal communities
* Teaching film audio to a group of teenagers while making a documentary on cultural identity in Rotorua,
New Zealand
* Participation in musical ensembles since the age of 11 - I currently perform regularly with four ensembles
* Acting in several short films and student productions, and also a three month paid acting job in Tasmania

Having spent time doing voluntary work in Kenya and travelling in South East Asia, I became all too aware of the problems the poorest communities face due to a lack of education and opportunities. Once you've seen that kind of poverty for yourself, you can't ignore it, and now I feel it's my turn to help. One person can't change the world, but having seen how children can learn through participation in the arts in this country, I feel this is one way in which I can use my talents and experiences to make a small difference to some of the worlds poorest people.
